Non-Dairy Caramelized Onion Dip | Phoenix Food Photographer

I love an onion dip. I can’t eat dairy, so I usually just buy the Vegan Caramelized Onion Dip from Trader Joe’s, but this time I decided to make my own. It wasn’t my first time caramelizing onions, and it was also not my first time being incredulous at the recipes that always say it takes 25 minutes to caramelize onions. It does not. It takes way longer. So be prepared!

Non-Dairy Caramelized Onion Dip (this is pretty simple, and the kind of thing where I just eyeball a lot of it, so be flexible!)

3 yellow onions
2 Tbs plant-based butter
1 Tbs olive oil
2 or 3 garlic cloves, chopped
A sprig or two of fresh thyme leaves

Caramelize the onions! Low and slow is key. Don’t burn them! Add the garlic and thyme about halfway through. Let cool before adding to sour cream mixture.

2 containers non-dairy sour cream
A big dollop of mayo (can be egg-free to make the recipe vegan)
2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder (to be honest I didn’t measure those last two…)
Salt and pepper to taste

Mix the above together with a whisk. Add the cooled onions. Serve and enjoy!
